Transportation system in kerala encompasses Road,Rail,Water and Air .First rail transport in Kerala started way back in 1860.
Six national highways and 53 state highways are there in Kerala.National highways touching kerala are NH47 ( Salem to kanyakumari),NH17( panaveli to Edappally),NH49 (Kochi tot Madurai),NH208 ( Kollam to Tirumangalam),NH212 ( kozhikode to mysore ),NH213 (Kozhikode to plalakkad),NH220 ( Kollam to Teni ). Other networks of roads in Kerala are so wide spread that no village is unconnected with the rest of Kerala.However because of high density of vehicles plying on Kerala roads ,further development of roads like Express Highway are on governments agenda ..Kerala state transport project is under implementation.Public transport system on Kerala roads depend on Bus,Cars and Auto taxi.
Kerala has three International airports at Trivandrum ,Ernakulam and Calicut . Kannur airport project is under progress.
Water transportation through lakes is presently available in Quilon ,Alleppy and Cochin. Further developments of water transport are in progress . Main seaport in Kerala is in Cochin .Cochin port can accomodate big passenger and container ships .Other ports in Kerala are Thankassery and neendakara(both quilon),Alleppyand Beypore(Calicut). Vizhinjam(Trivandrum) port project is under consideration.
